IoT and Sustainability: How Farming and IoT Meet

By Ken Briodagh January 05, 2018

The IoT Evolution Expo and LPWAN Expo are coming up fast, and we interviewed our speakers to get a bit of a preview of what to expect from the conferences.

Here, we spoke to Rick Harlow, Executive VP & Head of Americas, Flutura Decision Sciences & Analytics, who will be a featured speaker in the following session during the week of education:

IoT and Sustainable Resources. On the farm, the weather drives decisions. If there is a drought you try to store, if there is rain you try to divert. Whether drones are watching above or sensors are buried in the soil, they are being used to manage resources, optimize crop production and track equipment. This session explores the numerous ways farming is being optimized by IoT.

Here is a little preview of his thoughts:

IoT Evolution: What will be some key points you plan to hit in your session?
Rick Harlow: I will be discussing how energy companies are using Industrial IOT to reduce operational expenses and increase efficiencies.

What energy companies are looking for in an Industrial IoT partner.

How can you take advantage of it?

IoTE: What new insights can attendees expect to take home from your session?
RH: Real world applications in energy / oil and gas

Landmines to avoid

IoTE: Can you identify a few important trends influencing your sector of the IoT which will shape the path of the industry? Why these?
RH: Digital Twinning of machines and complex processes – This is where one of the missing links are right now in Energy

Lack of Technology innovation in oil & gas – oil & gas companies have been in a silo for decades and have been slow to adapt new Industrial IoT technologies.  Now we are starting to see movement in this sector.

IoTE: What are the biggest challenges facing the IoT? What are some important tools needed to overcome them?
RH: Ownership of IP

Ownership of Data

Where to start on their IoT journey – workshops, PoC’s / Pilots / scale

IoTE: Which vertical markets have the most to gain from IoT implementation? Which are leading and which are still behind the adoption curve?
RH: Oil & Gas / Upstream / Midstream are slow to adapt IIOT technologies. Lagging behind

Leaders include automotive, aviation, transportation, healthcare

IoTE: What session(s) (other than yours) are you most looking forward to attending at the Expo? Why?
RH: Fog Computing, I’m interested in seeing how other companies are approaching this.

Blockchain, I’m also interested in seeing others’ points of view on this subject
