IoT Evolution World Week in Review

It’s May Day, my friends, and that means it’s time to inject some new life into your IoT innovations. This week at This week at IoThThuitffffffffff

IoT Evolution World, we peeked into the Dog Life and saw a solution for improving the lives of senior citizens. We got attacked by vampires and Carl Ford told us a story. It’s been interesting to say the least.

Some of the biggest news came out of the European Union (EU). On April 28, the governing body of the EU decreed that all new cars produced or sold in member nations must have emergency call devices installed at the factory by 2018.

In the world of Fog Computing, a new report by IDC says that developers in the IoT need to get their act in gear when it comes to datacenter management. The volume of stored data is about to become unmanageable under the current system, the report predicted. Bad news.

On the big brand side, there was some interesting news to report. Hitachi Construction Machinery launched a new program to connect its entire fielded fleet with M2M communications, Texas Instruments and SIGFOX teamed up to create a low power connectivity solution and Samsung announced that it will begin development on a smart home solution designed to monitor seniors and help them stay independent and living without 24 hour assistance for much longer.

While we’re on the subject of taking care of loved ones, a new startup called DogTelligent is working on a smart collar to help make sure dogs don’t get lost.

In his column this week, Carl Ford told us a story about a potential future when we’re using M2M technology to hack our bodies and tie ourselves into a nano-IoT. And finally: vampires. Not the blood sucking or sparkly kind (shudder), but the kind that drains power off the grid to keep devices in standby mode. As the IoT grows this will become a major waster. We spoke with one vendor that is trying to solve the problem.
