IoT Evolution World Week in Review: MOCAheart, Verisae, IoT Evolution Expo

By

Hello there, my IoT Evolution World friends and fans. I spent the week at Cisco headquarters in San Jose for the data and connectivity giant’s Global Editor’s Conference. It was pretty amazing, and I learned a lot. I’ll be dropping some big stories about the company’s strategy to dominate the IoT over the next 10 years.  For now, though, let’s get into this week.

World Heart Day was September 29 and to celebrate it, MOCACARE announced its new cardiovascular health monitoring and management solution, MOCAheart, a smart health device that gives people a new way to track heart health without the need for bulky cuffs or complicated monitors. It uses a pressure sensor that combines a thumb scan with an algorithm for measuring blood flow and velocity, which get combined to determine heart rate and blood oxygen levels.

In a great guest column this week, our friends at Verisae dropped some knowledge about Big Data on us. In testimony before congress in 2014, Mike Rowe, best known for hosting shows promoting “Dirty Jobs” noted that culturally, Americans are moving away from jobs like welding, even as millions of Americans remain out of work. The answer is to make the jobs “cool” again, and like many things in modern business, this will require Big Data. The companies that conquer these challenges will be the first to attract tomorrow’s technicians and be prepared for the future of the service industry.

Carl Ford rode the rails across Canada this week, and he had some deep thoughts about connectivity while he rode. As he sat on the train, he wondered why, in the age of connectivity, connectivity is not readily available everywhere. The answer was one of priorities. We are hitting a new plateau in the IoT market, where alternative wireless solutions are being deployed that include low power wide area systems, cellular antennas that support IoT devices. What then is the compelling reason to make the existing infrastructure connected? Some of the answers will be found at IoT Evolution Expo, coming up in January in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

Visit us on IoT Evolution World for all the IoT news, my friends. Keep the IoT Evolution Expo in January in Fort Lauderdale in your calendar. We’re looking for speakers now. Also, please get in touch with us when you have stories. As always, if you have questions, comments, input or abuse, please send it to our editorial director, Ken Briodagh at [email protected] or on Twitter @KenBriodagh.
