IoT Evolution World Week in Review: Verizon, Goodyear, Olympics

By

Hello, friends. This is the IoT Evolution World Week in Review, and as the kiddos in the U.S. head back to school, we brought you some great lessons from the IoT. Let the learning begin.

In our lead story this week, our analyst friend James Brehm has a mouthful to say about Verizon’s recent forays into Connected Transportation through some big figure acquisitions, adding up to about $3.3 billion and almost 20 percent of the marketplace. Was it a smart expenditure? Brehm says no.

Over on our IoT Evolution YouTube channel, we brought you a great video from the IoT Evolution Expo, featuring the keynote from James Euchner, VP, Global Innovation, Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co., in which he shows how smarter tires are critical to the safety and success of more and more connected vehicles, and will lead the way to automated transportation.

And now, the news:
Chronicled, Inc., a San Francisco-based technology company, has launched an Open Registry for IoT, designed to encourage growth and interoperability in the consumer IoT. Built on the Ethereum blockchain, the registry stores the identities of physical items, for starters, consumer goods and collectibles embedded with BLE and NFC microchips.

With the Olympics wrapped up in Brazil, there’s a great IoT Olympic story to be told, and some amazing technology that made the competition better, the experience smoother and the industry the behind-the-scenes gold medalist.

Dozens of IoT inventions are being launched and built every week on Collaborizm, a rapidly growing, global online community of engineers, developers and creatives who help each other make and connect things. And they do it for free, on what may be one of the world’s most interesting open source platforms for human creativity.

This week on the IoT Time Podcast, I sat down with Grant Asplund, VP, sales and business development, CENTRI Technology, about IoT development, security and the role of the developer in new defenses. I also grabbed some time for an extended episode with Gary Davis, Chief Consumer Security Evangelist, Intel, and Carl Ford, CEO, Crossfire Media, to talk about how the IoT can make security a part of its DNA and why that needs to happen as soon as possible. This episode is sponsored by Genius NY, a technology incubator offering more than $1 million in funding.

There’s plenty more to read, listen to and watch, so visit us on IoT Evolution World for all the IoT news, my friends. Now is the time to put the next IoT Evolution Expo, to be held in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, into your calendar. Also, please get in touch with us when you have stories. As always, if you have questions, comments, complaints or compliments, please send them to me, editorial director Ken Briodagh, at [email protected] or on Twitter @KenBriodagh
