IoT Evolution World Week in Review: GE, Berlin, Mercedes-AMG

By

Welcome to the IoT Evolution Week in Review, my friends. This week, we’ve been talking about the future of Consumer IoT, Smart Cities, Motorsports and more. Let’s get into it, shall we?

In our lead story, a recent survey from strategy consulting firm Altman Vilandrie & Company is stating that nearly half of U.S. companies using an Internet of Things network have been hit by a recent security breach, which reportedly cost up to 13 percent of smaller companies’ annual revenues and firms with annual revenues above $2 billon estimated the potential cost of just one IoT breach at more than $20 million.

We had a great guest post from Morten Illum, VP of EMEA, Aruba, a Hewlett Packard Enterprise company, we learn that the Internet of Things is finally at a stage where it’s coming more into the forefront, in terms of the technology and consumer adoption. Connected smart meters wirelessly track our domestic energy usage, while smart watches and smart cars are playing a small but influential role in the wider IoT movement. And this is even before we get started on connected home technologies, ranging from security sensors to connected light bulbs and even smart toasters.

And now, the news: Bell has announced that it will launch an LTE-M (Long Term Evolution, category M1) network in order to support the increasing use of Internet of Things (IoT) devices on low-power, wide-area networks (LPWAN) in Canada.

Tata Communications, the official connectivity provider to Formula 1 and the supplier of Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motorsport, has launched the 2017 F1 Connectivity Innovation Prize and unveiled the first challenge of this year’s competition, focused on the Internet of Things (IoT). The first challenge, set by Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motorsport, asks F1 fans and technology enthusiasts to come up with ideas for IoT solutions that could be used by the team to deliver peak performance at each Grand Prix.

The Industrial Internet Consortium, the world’s leading organization transforming business and society by accelerating the Industrial Internet of Things, will host a Smart Cities Forum on June 14 in Berlin, Germany. This public event will showcase industrial Internet technologies that will enable smart cities of the future.

Over the last few years, I have seen some major trends forming across nearly every vertical in the consumer and industrial spaces, and these trends looked like they were pointing toward a future where the IoT would indeed be improving the lives and living conditions of people all over the world, and so I decided to begin writing a book in order to look for patterns in those trends. That book, published recently, is called “IoT Time: Evolving Trends in the Internet of Things.” In a new weekly series, we’ll be previewing chapters for you to read in the hopes that you’ll like enough to read the whole thing.

On the IoT Time Podcast, I sat down with Steven Martin, CDO, GE Energy Connections, to talk about Smart Cities, Smart Energy, Smart Grid and Get Smart. One of the above is not like the others.

There’s plenty more to read, listen to and watch, so visit us on IoT Evolution World for all the IoT news, my friends. Now is the time to put into your calendar the next IoT Evolution Expo, to be held in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Also, please get in touch with us when you have stories. As always, if you have questions, comments, complaints or compliments, please send them to me, editorial director Ken Briodagh at [email protected] or on Twitter @KenBriodagh.
