IoT Evolution World Week in Review: Verizon, Sierra, Numerex, US Senate

By

Welcome to the IoT Evolution Week in Review, my friends. This week, it’s all about M&A, Government oversight, Vehicle Telematics and more in this IoT Evolution Week in Review Let’s get into it, shall we?

In our lead story, U.S. Senators Mark R. Warner, Democrat of Virgina, Cory Gardner, Republican of Colorado, Ron Wyden, Democrat of Oregon, and Steve Daines Republican of Montana, introduced bipartisan legislation with the goal of improving the cybersecurity of IoT devices. Warner and Gardner are co-chairs of the Senate Cybersecurity Caucus, The Internet of Things (IoT) Cybersecurity Improvement Act of 2017 would require that devices purchased by the U.S. government meet certain minimum security requirements.

And now, the news: In a recent merger announcement, Numerex, a major provider of enterprise solutions enabling the Internet of Things (IoT), and Sierra Wireless, a well-recognized provider of fully integrated device-to-cloud solutions for the IoT, have together made public that they have entered into a definitive merger agreement under which Sierra Wireless will acquire Numerex in a stock-for-stock merger transaction.

The Industrial Internet Consortium (IIC), an organization dedicated to transforming business and society by accelerating the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), and the Edge Computing Consortium (ECC), a professional group of companies driving edge computing industry development in the Internet of Things (IoT), have announced they have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to partner on shared interests of advancing the industrial Internet and edge computing.

Senion announced that Ericsson has deployed its StepInside Indoor Positioning System (IPS) in its 500,000 square foot Kista (Stockholm) headquarters.

Globetouch and Verizon Telematics are planning to launch a suite of upgraded network solutions that will be used by General Motors in connection with the continued global expansion of the automotive OEM’s OnStar’s connected vehicle services.

On the IoT Time Podcast, I sat down Mary Beth Hall, Director of Product Development for IoT at Verizon at the IoT Evolution Expo, to talk about Smart Cities, Verizon ThingSpace, and enterprise-level municipal partnerships.

Over the last few years, I have seen some major trends forming across nearly every vertical in the consumer and industrial spaces, and these trends looked like they were pointing toward a future where the IoT would indeed be improving the lives and living conditions of people all over the world, and so I decided to begin writing a book in order to look for patterns in those trends. That book, published recently, is called “IoT Time: Evolving Trends in the Internet of Things.

There’s plenty more to read, listen to and watch, so visit us on IoT Evolution World for all the IoT news, my friends.
