ThoughtWire Rolls Out Vertical Smart Building and Smart Hospital Applications

By

As IoT deployments continue to move and grow from pilots and proof-of-concepts to more utilitarian and industry-focused systems, ThoughtWire announced the availability of five new applications “for the real-time orchestration of people, systems and connected things.”

The applications are all built around productivity and efficiency – with a down-to-earth solution where the power of process change and optimization is placed in the hands of those best able to affect it.

“ThoughtWire’s goal is to establish itself as a leader in the emerging market segment of Operations Performance Management (OPM),” said Michael Monteith, CEO of ThoughtWire. “Building owners and healthcare providers are looking for proven solutions to achieve a rapid return on their IoT investments, and we’re extending beyond the typical developer-centric approach of most IoT providers to help tap into the true potential of intelligent operations for built environments.”

A recent 451 report found that 41 percent of companies said the IoT’s lack of perceived ROI was a barrier to adoption.

In the meantime, enterprise operations are becoming more complex as they continue to invest in digital transformation, which creates efficiencies, but also leads to more endpoints, more systems, and more data to manage.

ThoughtWire thought through this paradox, and addressed the issues of more complex workflows, siloed data sources, lack of relevant data, absence of predictive analytics, and how human beings need to interface with data systems, and claim their solutions yield cost savings, an increase in asset value, and an improved experience for IT and operations teams responsible for ensuring quality outcomes.

“With our OPM application suites, building owners now have the ability to experience real process change and unlock better outcomes for their patients and tenants, which can dramatically impact – and even save – the lives of the people they are serving,” Monteith continued.

Whether for a large multi-tenant building or specifically for a large hospital, the ThoughtWire technology brings together data that’s captured by a variety of systems and connected devices for context-rich orchestration that helps optimize operations and improve workflows, while harnessing real-time, contextual information that can be acted upon using mobile applications tied to the systems.

“The suite of apps engages end-users by giving them the right information at the right time to drive desirable operational outcomes for their smart buildings.  The suite puts the power of process change into the hands of building managers and their tenants,”  Monteith added.

On the smart hospital front, the company reports that one hospital was able to realize an annual ROI of 900 percent, saving $2.7 million per year, through its work with ThoughtWire.

“Failure to recognize patient deterioration is a significant issue for acute care hospitals. The use of early warning scores that track abnormal vital signs is a strategy to recognize the unwell patient,” said Alison Fox-Robichaud, BSc, MSc, MD, FRCPC, Department of Critical Care, Hamilton Health Sciences Centre. “In collaboration with ThoughtWire, our hospital has harnessed the power of our electronic health record to alert healthcare professionals in a timely manner. This has led to reduced cardiac arrests and unplanned intensive care unit admissions.”

"More than 50% of a clinician’s time is spent on non-patient-care-related tasks that center around data gathering, data entry, calling, scheduling, and other admin tasks required to make a hospital run," Monteith said. "We’re helping clinicians preempt critical events, improve and optimize the flow of patients through the hospital, and respond faster when events do occur – all through our ability to provide the right data to the right people, in context, at the right time."

ThoughtWire was an early innovator in IoT when, in 2009, they introduced their Ambiant platform, developed to interconnect and orchestrate people, data, and things in real time. Since then, they have been developing technology in the smart building arena, with increasing specialization in large hospital building and operational optimization.
