Freewave Rolls Out Sensor-2-Server Zumlink Radio Series

By Ken Briodagh May 03, 2016

zumLink joins a new generation of wireless IoT radio technology with faster throughput, lower power consumption

Speed is important to the IoT, especially in industrial circles with mission-critical functions but not speed at all costs. It also needs to come with security and low power draw if the speed of the device is to be best used.

FreeWave Technologies, an industrial M2M and IoT wireless networking solutions developer, has announced a new wireless IoT Sensor-2-Server solutions suite: ZumLink. The ZumLink product family offers customers a flexible new radio design that supports a link rate of up to 4Mbps and the ability to support third-party applications, FreeWave says. These capabilities are designed to provide customers with increased bandwidth, low power consumption and the ability to collect, protect, transport and control data from the edge to the server.

“The new ZumLink Family represents an evolution for FreeWave and opens up brand new communication possibilities for our customers,” said Scott Allen, CMO, FreeWave Technologies. “ZumLink enables customers to tailor their IoT communications to whatever they need, commercial or industrial, and also provides the ability to develop custom software applications for their future technology requirements.”

The initial release will feature four platforms: two radio modules, a board level embeddable and a fully enclosed device. All four operate in the 900MHz unlicensed frequency range. The ZumLink Series is available now. Pricing varies, depending upon configuration and quantity.

The search for speed comes with many challenges, but it’s one with which we can afford to take our time to get it right in terms of security and power and function. It remains to be seen if FreeWave has nailed it, but as more and more players get into the speedy game the  players that succeed will inevitably be the fastest.

As the philosopher Wrecks-N-Effect once said,” All I wanna do is zooma-zoom-zoom-zoom and a boom boom.” Boom boom, indeed.
