Atmel Corp. and Labelec SA Enter into a Pioneer Partnership

Atmel (News - Alert) Corp. and Labelec SA will develop smart grid solutions obeying inter-operative power line communication (PLC) and the standard intelligent metering evolution (PRIME) standard following the signing of a memorandum of understanding regarding the partnership.

This is the first ever MoU between a distribution system operator (DSO) and technology provider to develop solutions using the PRIME standard to develop an open, public and non-proprietary telecommunications architecture to support present and future AMM functionalities. The goal of the project is to establish a full set of international standards to allow full interoperability of equipment and systems from different providers.

Subject to the terms of the MoU, the two companies are involving themselves into field tests to help figure out the best solution for the Portuguese market compliant to PLC and PRIME terms before they initiate a large-scale smart grid roll out in the short run.

The deployment of the realized solution will ultimately allow consumers to lay hands on the desired real-time, two-way capabilities necessary to service the increasing number of smart grid applications.

Commenting on the project, Miguel Ángel Sánchez Fornié, chairperson of the PRIME Alliance said, “We are delighted to see activities oriented to massive deployments that reinforce the use of a well proven technology.”

According to Luís da Silva Carrilho, managing director, Labelec SA, Atmel’s experience in smart metering is crucial in delivering smart metering solutions with laser beam precision to customers. He revealed that Labelec SA would collaborate in a number of projects with Atmel before they initiate the mass rollout as stipulated by the terms and conditions of the agreement.

On the other hand, said Jesús Teijeiro, marketing director, Smart Energy Power Line Communications, Atmel Corporation feels that teaming up with Labelec SA, the largest and most innovative name in the Portuguese market, is a one of a kind opportunity. He says, "Portugal and Labelec SA are at the cutting edge of technological innovation in Europe, and we look forward to enabling cost-efficient, low-power smart meters throughout this region and to continued collaboration with Labelec."
