The Internet of Things is expected to change life as we know it – making our businesses, cities, and homes more efficient; our energy, industrial, and transportation systems safer; and our people healthier. While cellular networks can deliver the connectivity required to enable these things to communicate with each other and centralized systems, the devices themselves need to be very affordable, manageable, power-efficient, and secure.
LTE (News - Alert), the most recent iteration of cellular technology used in devices and networks, is an ideal way to address IoT, according to Eran Eshed, co-founder and vice president of marketing and business development at Altair Semiconductor (News - Alert). But rather than adding LTE functionality to the laundry list of technologies already supported on devices and their components, IoT calls for LTE chipsets that are IoT optimized and LTE-only so they can deliver viable solutions to meet the price points and other requirements of these specific applications.

“What we’re offering,” says Eshed, “is a very thin modem that provides everything you need, and not a thing more.”
That said, it is notable that the system-level security features (addressing things like power consumption, security, and more) available in the new Altair modules are above and beyond those detailed in the LTE specifications. Altair also offers a higher more comprehensive level of power management than is defined in LTE Category 0 to allow for maximum sleep time and to allow for wake time exactly when it’s needed. That allows IoT applications – such as smart metering – based on Altair technology to run for up to 10 years on a single battery.
