Intel Details Its Gateway Strategy at IoT Evolution Expo

Intel (News - Alert) is not just a chip company.

The brand has been and remains a key thought leader and investor in what’s new and what’s important in computing and communications.

In terms of product portfolio, in addition to chips, the company also offers end-to-end platforms and architectures. That includes the IoT Gateway (News - Alert) about which Intel software architect Robert Watts spoke at the IoT Evolution Expo.

Intel’s IoT Gateway delivers pre-integrated and pre-validated hardware with critical software components, he said, to allow for the collection of valuable data from the 85 percent of systems that aren’t connected today. It enables seamless and secure data flow;

integrated security for physical device and software; extensive scalability; and allows users to remotely manage, provision, and update via a centralized console.

A lot of Intel customers told the company they wanted someone else to worry about the security and management of their IoT solutions so they could focus on the core value of what they’re building, said Watts, and that’s what this IoT Gateway delivers. It allows for fast time to market with a validated and integrated solution, he said, and it lets users shift their resources into value-added application development for new services and cost savings.

Using a smart gateway as opposed to just a collection of smart sensors makes IoT more affordable, Watts said. Sending every bit of data into the cloud is not a cost-effective or manageable situation, he explained. A gateway addresses that by filtering and aggregating data.

Intel provides a hardened gateway, he said, but it’s also an easy development experience, and one that provides customers flexibility in operating systems. The Intel IoT Gateway Multi-OS Portfolio supports commercial operating systems from Microsoft and Wind River (News - Alert) as well as the open source Snappy Ubuntu Core.
