IoT Evolution World Week in Review: Verizon, Cybersecurity, FAA

By Ken Briodagh October 31, 2015

Hello, IoT Evolution World, it’s me, Ken. I hope you’ve all had a good week. It’s been pretty epic over here at IoT Evolution central. We’re deep into the planning stages for IoT Evolution Expo, and it’s going to be bigger than you’ve ever seen it, folks. More speakers, more demos and deep learning – not to mention an exhibit hall that’ll knock you over with awesome.

Also, we re-launched everyone’s favorite web series all about IoT news. That’s right, IoT Time is back, and badder than ever, so check it out. It’s fun. If you’ve got input and ideas for how to improve, or what to cover, feel free to drop me a line. Hey – reach out if you want to be a guest sometime, too.

Now, the news.

Verizon (News - Alert) has made it clear that the future is the IoT, and the telecom plans to be a major part of that future. In a livestreamed announcement on Wednesday, October 28, the company unveiled its vision the IoT, and it’s called ThingSpace. ThingSpace will take IoT solutions development and make it easy, quick and cost effective. It’s a web-based development platform, loaded with a set of APIs and a management tool for data and device activity analytics, all with the goal of bringing development costs down.

Meanwhile, it has been National Cybersecurity Awareness Month all month (did you remember to change your passwords recently?) and the Online Trust Alliance (OTA) and the National Association of Realtors (NAR) have partnered to celebrate the occasion by building a Smart Home Checklist that offers guidance to help home buyers, renters and sellers as they try manage the privacy and security of their smart homes and devices. Live it, learn it, love it.

The drone market is already heavily regulated, almost to the point of impossibility if you ask some folks. Well, thanks to a recent announcement, it looks like the FAA could be taking steps to make it a bit less impossible by adding a drone registration requirement. U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx and FAA Administrator Michael Huerta have created a task force to develop recommendations for a registration process for Unmanned Aircraft Systems. Dronin’ ain’t easy, y’all.

Finally, in one of my columns this week, I dropped my sci-fi nerdiness on you by introducing you to some of the Arthur C. Clarke-iest IoT tech developers in the industry. The IoT is the natural home of the engineer, the geek, the techie and the early adopter. In other words: folks who like their tech raw and bleeding edge. Well, it’s time for a change. It’s time to make it just work.

There’s plenty more to read, so visit us on IoT Evolution World for all the IoT news, my friends. Keep the IoT Evolution Expo in January in Fort Lauderdale in your calendar. We’re always looking for speakers, especially on the subject of security right now. Also, please get in touch with us when you have stories. As always, if you have questions, comments, input or abuse, please send it to our editorial director, Ken Briodagh at kbriodagh@tmcnet.com or on Twitter (News - Alert) @KenBriodagh.
