Cradlepoint Acquires Pertino and the Cloud gets Closer to Checkmate

By Carl Ford December 08, 2015

Running events for a living, I get to hear a lot of messaging. Sometimes the messaging clicks with my experience. Cradlepoint’s messaging on how to mesh their gateways to support Enterprise Cloud operations is a case in point. Cradlepoint’s ability to virtualize and manage traffic has been a great use case for everything from fixing brown fields in industrial complex to managing Retail POS transactions.

The addition of Pertino expands the virtualization into a move complete Software Defined Network model and supports the cloud services models for the Enterprise.

In just over three years, for hundreds of companies of all sizes, Pertino has managed to “spin-up” virtual overlay networks across the Internet—connecting workforces, workloads and devices of all kinds spanning 90 countries with over 60 terabytes per month of traffic. In comparison, Cradlepoint’s customer base includes more than 15,000 customers and 1.3 million units installed worldwide, including 50 percent of the Fortune 100, 75 percent of top retailers and 25 of the top U.S. city governments.

Combined with Cradlepoint, “Pertino will add virtualized, policy-based services that will extend the visibility, security and control of your Pertino networks end-to-end. Additionally, we aspire to extend our SDN-powered cloud platform to support new hybrid WAN, overlay networking and enterprise IoT use cases,” the company said in a statement.

As our friend James Brehm, Chief Technology Evangelist at JBrehm associates points out, “the Pertino acquisition extends Cradlepoint’s leadership position in the Enterprise Networking space by adding next generation SDN capabilities competitors aren’t even yet thinking about. They are playing chess while others in that space are playing checkers.”

And that’s no Queen’s Gambit.
