IoT Editors Day Silicon Valley: Ayla Helps Device Manufacturers Flex, Scale

By Paula Bernier January 04, 2016

The ability for connected products to collect information about their health as well as end user usage is arming the manufacturers of these solutions with near real-time data that they can then use to improve their offerings – enhancing their reputations and revenues, and building customer satisfaction, in the process.

Rodrick McLane spoke with TMC’s Erik Linask at Editors Day Santa Clara 2015 in November about how Ayla Networks can help facilitate such results with its IoT platform. The Ayla Networks platform enables manufacturers and service providers to bring connected products to market quickly and securely.

As McLane told Linask, when approaching the IoT market many manufacturers are faced with a buy vs. build decision relating to their Internet of Things platform. But, as an Ayla Networks white paper explains, manufacturers are likely to underestimate what it really takes to make that leap.

A successful IoT implementation, said McLane, requires a scalable architecture that provides the manufacturer with a lot of flexibility to make changes as needed and without the creation of a lot of code. Ayla Networks, he added, allows for that, enabling manufacturers to focus on their core competencies – their products – while Ayla Networks does the rest.

McLane said one manufacturer of fire and safety products through the Ayla Networks IoT solution was able to identify an issue with its registration process. Instead of waiting three to four months down the line to recognize and address the issue, he added, the company was able to fix the issue within a few days, protecting its reputation and delivering a better end user experience as a result.

More manufacturers are now starting to understand the value of IoT and how it can be used to collect data from their devices to create new monetization models and deliver better products to the marketplace, said McLane. Most manufacturers start out with small IoT pilot projects, but when they start to see how they and their customers can benefit, they gain a true appreciate for what’s possible, said McLane of Ayla Networks, which was recently named a Gartner 2015 Cool Vendor.
