The IoT is finally moving from hype to execution, but for the mass of onlookers, the time is now for proof. Many companies are showing executions and results that matter in the real world, but it is still too few.
As we move into the next year, we here at IoT Evolution World are going to be looking to highlight the best-in-class case studies from the IoT that will show where the industry really is right now, hype-aside, and what its true potential is to make the world better.
The first one is courtesy of the March 28 announcement from Bsquare, an IoT company with the mission of helping its partners make the world smarter. The company is showing off a series of use-case-specific proofs of concept with multiple customers across disparate industrial sectors for its DataV solution. The DataV IoT platform includes device connectivity, real-time data monitoring and automation and analytics, and is designed to drive predictive reasoning and device/process optimization. The end goal is to help enterprises get past the nitty-gritty of the technology and focus on the business of providing better services for customers.
“There are six IoT use cases that matter: asset use, predictive failure, data-driven diagnostics, device management, condition-based servicing, and asset optimization,” said Jerry Chase, CEO of Bsquare. “Things need more than connectivity. IoT requires systems integration support.”
The company ran down several key use conditions, and has outlined the implications for those industries in terms of day-to-day improvements. For instance, an electric utility equipment manufacturer will provision and manage software applications embedded in thousands of meters, across dozens of utilities. Commercial truck manufacturers will improve asset uptime, reduce warranty exposure, drive down service costs, and improve product design.
All that is well and good, but as we’ve said, if it ain’t in the field, it’s still talk. So, in the field, a manufacturer of candy and operator of vending machines are using DataV to streamline inventory management, ensure jurisdictional tax compliance, increase asset uptime, and reduce service costs. To accomplish this, Bsquare partnered with Intel (News - Alert), Microsoft and Aaeon and created a working “intelligent vending” solution.
“For our DataV customers, successful IoT initiatives hinge on real-world, business-oriented use cases,” said Chase. “We believe that tangible, achievable business outcomes will drive the market for IoT and that Bsquare DataV is showing IoT to be capable of delivering on its promise."
