Our lead story this week comes from Washington D.C., where the State Department is making big moves into practical IoT. The U.S. Department of State this week awarded C3 (News - Alert) IoT a multi-year contract up to $25 million to provide its IoT enterprise application development platform for energy management and predictive analytics. This will be the federal government’s first enterprise-wide contract of this type, which is designed to help achieve and maintain statutory, executive order, and department energy and sustainability goals.

In more American news, American Municipal Power (AMP), a non-profit wholesale power supplier for 133 municipalities in nine U.S. states, announced that it will work with Silver Spring Networks to implement an advanced metering infrastructure program, which could improve efficiency for up to 645,000 customers in AMP’s network.
Autonomous cars are cruising ever closer to on-road operations. With approval for three new testbeds in Washington D.C., Las Vegas and Miami-Dade County, IBM Watson and Local Motors, a vehicle technology integrator, have introduced a self-driving vehicle that integrate the advanced cognitive computing capabilities of IBM’s (News - Alert) Watson supercomputer.
Semtech, a semiconductor maker and provider low-power wide-area network (LP-WAN) connectivity known as LoRa, announced recently that it has joined the Board of Governors of the IoT M2M Council (IMC). The IMC is an IoT trade association with over 18,000 members worldwide from 25 different vertical-market segments.
And in a great guest column from Areg Alimian, senior director, solutions marketing, Ixia (News - Alert), we learned that the Force surrounds us, and that fear is the path to the Dark Side of the IoT, especially in terms of Wifi testing.
