IoT Evolution World Week in Review: DEF CON, TomTom, Cannabis

By Ken Briodagh September 17, 2016

Hello, friends. It’s feeling like fall today in the Northeast for the IoT Evolution World Week in Review. Let’s lose our cool for some sweet IoT news.

In our lead stories this week, at DEF CON 24’s second annual IoT Village hackathon-like event, the participants uncovered more than 47 new vulnerabilities across 23 different IoT devices from 21 brand name manufacturers. Terrifying. Meanwhile, according to a new study from ABI Research (News - Alert), although the Smart City marketplace is a bit stagnant at the moment thanks to fragmentation and slow-acting facilities managers, an uptick is coming.

In a great guest post from Dr. Vladimir Krylov, Big Data and Machine Learning Technologies Consultant for Artezio (News - Alert), he examines whether or not it is now the time to apply Fog Computing to the IoT. Spoiler: Hell yes, it is.

And now, the news:
Tekes, the Finnish Funding Agency for Innovation, and IBM (News - Alert) have announced a partnership that will enable Finland to use Watson cognitive computing to help doctors improve the health of its citizens, and strengthen and develop the Finnish innovation and business ecosystem in the fields of health and well-being.

Cubic Corporation has announced that a consortium of its subsidiaries in Australia and Singapore have signed a contract with the Land Transport Authority (LTA) in Singapore to design and deliver automated fare collection equipment for the authority’s future railway, the Thomson (News - Alert)-East Coast Line.

MassRoots, a technology platform for cannabis consumers, businesses and activists with over 900,000 registered users, and Headset, a business intelligence platform for cannabis-related businesses, have announced a strategic partnership designed to expand the functionality and utility of the MassRoots and Headset platforms.

TomTom (News - Alert) announced the new TomTom BRIDGE Connected, a rugged navigation device built for vehicle fleets that connects business applications with TomTom maps, traffic, and navigation. It allows fleet drivers to directly connect with their customers, get updates as they happen and communicate with the home office easily, thanks to its built-in modem for wireless functionality.

This week on the IoT Time Podcast, I sit down with John Younes, Co-founder & COO, Litmus Automation, to talk about the IIoT, manufacturing automation, and an exciting new integration between IoT manufacturing technology and Salesforce CRM.
