Carnival Cruises into IoT with Connected Liners

By Ken Briodagh January 06, 2017

As the IoT gets into the act in more industries, we’re going to continue seeing some cool, unexpected integrations. In the most recent example, Carnival Cruise Corporation has launched its Ocean Medallion program, which gives passengers a connected, customized experience on select ships.

Designed to improve guest service and personalization for its passengers, Carnival’s platform revolves around the Ocean Medallion wearable, a digital experience portal called the Ocean Compass (News - Alert), and an Internet of Things network that combine to help guests get the most out of their vacations. The Ocean Medallion works in conjunction with Ocean Compass, a digital experience portal that serves as a vacation concierge before, during, and after travel. The Ocean Compass is used by guests to build personalized vacation experiences, browse and select from event-based itineraries, navigate onboard and in port, and share vacation photos and videos captured during their cruise.

The new guest experience platform will debut on Regal Princess from the company’s Princess Cruises brand in late 2017, followed by Royal Princess and Caribbean Princess in 2018, as part of new Medallion Class Ocean Vacations planned to be initially rolled out over multiple years on the entire Princess Cruises fleet.

“The network supporting the Ocean Medallion had to be scalable and flexible enough to deliver an unprecedented level of guest personalization and be delivered in an accelerated timeframe,” said Michael Jungen, SVP, guest experience design and technology, Carnival Corporation.

But Carnival isn’t doing it all by itself.

The Experience Engine (TE2), an experience-driven personalized advertisement and content delivery company, has announced its role as a development partner in Carnival’s new Ocean Medallion interactive guest experience platform. TE2 participated in key portions of the platform with an emphasis on core identification, data orchestration, legacy systems integration and industrialization services.

“Carnival’s experience platform, which leverages TE2’s advanced personalization technology, raises the bar across the board for delivery of exceptional guest experiences by leveraging  lifestyle preferences, location, reservations, time of day, past history and guest ratings” said Scott Sahadi, CEO, TE2. “TE2 is delighted to have been chosen by Carnival Corporation as one of the key engineering and development partners.  We have a passion for digitally connecting, leveraging and monetizing physical world experiences.”

Experience Design Engineering firm Level 11 has also announced a role as development partner in the Ocean Medallion interactive guest experience platform, in which Level 11 participated with an emphasis on location services, interactive wayfinding, communication and social media services.

“We are honored to be recognized as a key partner in the digital disruption of the cruise industry,” said Mark Hadland, CEO of Level 11. “Level 11's Experience Design Engineers have tackled some of the most complex solutions throughout the interactive experience platform development.”
