IoT Evolution World Week in Review: Verizon, DMI, IoTium

Welcome to the IoT Evolution Week in Review, my friends. This week, we’ve been talking about fiber, 5G, broadband and more. Let’s get into it, shall we?

In our lead story, we looked at IoT enablement technologies like 5G networks, augmented reality and machine learning and how they are driving innovation that is leading toward the birth of Smart Cities all over the world. A new Smart Cities Technology Roadmap developed by the Alliance for Telecommunications Industry Solutions (ATIS (News - Alert)), a global organization that brings together information and communication technology (ICT) companies, is set to inform city planners about technology that will help make Smart City technology possible.

We had a great guest post from Gian Bonanome, Senior Director, Business Development, Intelligent Product Solutions, in which he wrote about how the plan for smart cities will feature IoT connected surveillance, automated transportation, smarter energy management systems and environmental monitoring. Another burgeoning area is in healthcare, where IoT monitoring of vital signs will help patients avoid infections and assist in earlier care of medical conditions.

And now, the news: DMI (News - Alert), a global end-to-end mobility solutions developer, has announced the acquisition of Detroit-based Lochbridge, a market leader in bringing IoT solutions to the automotive, healthcare, financial services and manufacturing sectors. 

According to a recent series of announcements, IoTium, secure network infrastructure company for the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), has closed more than $8 million in Series A financing and made available a new Network as a Service (NaaS) offering.

EyeLock, an iris-based identity authentication solutions provider, has announced that the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) has issued U.S. Patent No. 9,646,217 that enables a single camera to acquire iris biometrics as well as a face image by providing suitable illumination adjustments between the two acquisitions. 

Ohio State University’s Department of Agricultural, Environmental, and Development Economics has released a study entitled “Connecting the Dots of Ohio’s Broadband Policy.”  The study reportedly shows that more than one million Ohioans still do not have adequate broadband access, and, if they did, it would mean as much as a two billion dollar impact for Ohio’s families and businesses.

Prysmian Group, a global energy and telecom cable systems industries provider, has been awarded a $300 million supply agreement from Verizon (News - Alert) Communications to support the company’s U.S. network expansion around a next-generation fiber platform designed to speed the deployment of 5G services, while improving 4G LTE (News - Alert) and other broadband capacity. 

Over the last few years, I have seen some major trends forming across nearly every vertical in the consumer and industrial spaces, and these trends looked like they were pointing toward a future where the IoT would indeed be improving the lives and living conditions of people all over the world, and so I decided to begin writing a book in order to look for patterns in those trends. That book, published recently, is called “IoT Time: Evolving Trends in the Internet of Things.” In a new weekly series, we’ll be previewing chapters for you to read in the hopes that you’ll like enough to read the whole thing.

On the IoT Time Podcast, I sat down with Soumya Das, CMO of Inpixon, to talk about IoT and Indoor GPS technology.
