IoT Healthcare: Huawei, Philips Cloud AI Makes Society Healthier

By Ken Briodagh October 16, 2017

According to a recent release, Huawei and Philips (News - Alert) have successfully developed an advanced cloud IoT Healthcare solution in China. By using cloud and machine-learning technologies, the companies expect this solution to sweep across the healthcare industry and lead to the creation of a new digital healthcare future.

“We worked with Huawei (News - Alert) to establish a cloud platform, enable IoT access, and develop solutions,” said Ludwig Liang, Population Health Management Director, Philips Greater China Region. “We have already tested some solutions on the cloud platform provided by Huawei and obtained very satisfying results. In the future, Philips and Huawei will work together to push healthcare solutions into the market.”

China's remote areas are in need of improved ways to tackle the growing healthcare demands and deliver convenient and safe patient care options, the release stated. Liang pointed out that cloud AI technologies are especially important for China's second-tier cities because many physicians “don't necessarily have skills to read image diagnostics like MRI and CT scans. If a doctor processes thousands of images a day, he may miss something.”

In 2016, Huawei and Philips signed a MoU to develop a cloud healthcare solution primarily for second-tier cities in China, which would provide high-quality cloud healthcare services to communities that lacked advanced healthcare systems. The Huawei-Philips Cloud Healthcare solution integrates Philips’ personal health care, disease diagnosis and treatment, management expertise and system platform with Huawei’s complete IT infrastructure, IoT connectivity and cloud AI capabilities. The solution has completed testing and is helping doctors make more accurate patient care decisions.

AI can make things easier for doctors by identifying patterns in patient data in order to precisely determine disease progress, or risk factors. The companies said that, by applying cloud AI technology, they hope to have a profound effect in underserved communities by automating visual diagnoses, reducing errors and lowering costs.

Cloud AI technology is designed to assist doctors by automating repetitive work and analyzing vast amounts of data and medical images to provide doctors with clinically relevant and high-quality data in real-time. It uses machine-learning to spot disease markers or mutations, and observe abnormalities more quickly and accurately than humans can. It can also help doctors share information while researching a diagnosis.
