Smart mobility solutions can make lives easier. In Tampere, Finland, these solutions reportedly are being developed to enhance major city development projects. Tampere is using real time traffic data, open data, positioning and robotics, and building a 5G mobile network.
The City of Tampere in Finland is developing fast and has secured almost10 Billion Euros of investments over the next ten years for multiple projects including a tramway, multipurpose arena and a the planned sustainable city district, Hiedanranta. These, along with smart city development projects and new infrastructure, will create a top testing platform in Europe for smart mobility.
The backbone of smart public transportation in Tampere will be the tramway running through the city by 2021, according to the release. The busiest points along the tramway will be created into mobility hubs that will have robotic bus feeder traffic for the tram, informative tram stops, and both physical and digital services that create smooth-running everyday life. The planned 5G mobile network will be built by Elisa (News - Alert) Oyj and completion is expected by April 2018.
“In Tampere we have exceptionally versatile know-how in the field of mobility and our ability to innovate is outstanding,” said Tero Blomqvist, the Smart Tampere Program Director, the City of Tampere. “We have built automatically moving machinery for over 20 years and since then we’ve specialized in IoT, connectivity and service design. We’ve managed to take the pieces of the mobile phone industry and turn those pieces into more new companies and innovations than we first thought was possible.”
