Intel (News - Alert) understands the IoT, and the way intelligence within it will grow. Dipti Vachani, VP, Internet of Things Group at Intel, likely understands that intelligence better than anyone else.
“Autonomy (News - Alert) drives exponential data growth,” she said in her keynote at the IoT Evolution Expo on Tuesday, January 23. But, she added, “Security is the number one barrier to IoT success.”
She talked about a timeline of IoT growth, which presented an ambitious, but reasonable trajectory for the growth of IoT data.
By the end of 2018, half of all IoT deployments will be network constrained, she said.
In 2019, 45 percent of data will be stored, analyzed and acted upon at the edge.
By 2020, the average internet user will be producing 1.5 gigabytes of data per day. A smart hospital in that same year will produce three terabytes of data per day.
We’re going to have to be ready for that.
“For economies at scale,” Vachani said, “the cloud will always be the most effective and efficient solution.” But there will be tools to help, including blockchain solutions, according to her predictions.
To that end, she said there will need to be a new CSS (News - Alert) for blockchain engagement in IoT. Moreover, “Blockchains establish a shared record, which allows distributed, autonomous things to form communities and cooperate,” Vachani said.
