As global as the Internet is, and as resilient as the Internet was designed to be, Syniverse (News - Alert), a 30-year old mobile network services company that already connects 7 billion mobile devices this week introduced a dedicated IoT network that avoids the public Internet altogether.
Syniverse Secure Global Access is a fully private, secure, service network that promises to safeguard critical data with five multinational enterprises already using it for IoT. While the names of the five customers were not disclosed, a spokesperson for Syniverse said they represent a variety of IoT platform providers.
The network is an IP-based private global network that is independent from the public internet, neither an Internet overlay nor a VPN.
And while the company is positioning the new service as ideal for connecting devices, with their first focus on more industrial IoT deployments, “Syniverse Secure Global Access is purpose built for any business that needs to securely transmit sensitive data, regardless of industry or vertical, and can serve consumer IoT applications.
Syniverse processes billions of transactions a day for mobile service providers across nearly 200 countries and territories, and developed the new private network with Dean Douglas (News - Alert), President and CEO, pointing out “The reality is that the Internet was not designed to be a secure environment, with malware and ransomware, data thefts and breaches, and hacks and distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks representing just some of the serious rising threats that undermine the public internet backbone.”
Syniverse also touted the Secure Global Access network as built for high speed, low latency IoT applications, which are becoming increasingly more sophisticated systems that include automation and AI-based features. “Our customers have the ability to leverage the network for a myriad of applications, including real time or near real time,” the company spokesperson said, also describing Syniverse as a “membership-based network, which means all devices connected to it must be provisioned in order to have access.”
