Vodafone, Mavenir Ambassadors of OpenRAN with New Small Cell Solution

By Maurice Nagle July 08, 2021

Small cells will see the Smart City summit maturity, and underpinning this success is the interoperability of OpenRAN, a flexible foundation for the future of modern connectivity. The IoT’s focus is certainly widespread; today a dynamic duo announced new OpenRAN technology for the office environment.

Vodafone and Mavenir announced an extended partnership putting heads together to deliver a small cell solution based on OpenRAN technology, providing 4G connectivity for business customers in medium to large office spaces.

Andrea Dona, Chief Network Officer, Vodafone (News - Alert) UK explained, “So far, OpenRAN deployment has focused on outdoor connectivity, but there is significant potential for this technology in the office environment. A simple plug-and-play product, which includes all the attractive benefits of the OpenRAN philosophy, is one that can build on our strength of providing indoor coverage through both our macro network and our bespoke solutions.”

The small cell solution provides plug-and-play installation, promising instant and seamless connectivity for office devices. Mavenir delivers its Open vRAN software, with Sercomm contributing radio hardware, crafting a solution offering interoperability with other Open RAN compliant vendors.

Virtyt Koshi, SVP Mavenir EMEA noted, “Mavenir is delighted to partner with Vodafone in Open RAN and to work in the UK on their radio network transformation initiative, proving the extreme flexibility of Open vRAN.”

There’s something to be said for embracing an open approach to connectivity, as it alleviates vendor lock in and offers the flexibility of future pivots and improvements. How does your office stay connected?
