Tuya Takes IoT Initiative Against Climate Change

By Greg Tavarez August 25, 2022

One big challenge for sustainable development is climate change. Countries are striving to achieve carbon neutrality to minimize the impact of greenhouse gases. The U.N. presented the goal to peak carbon emissions before 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality before 2060, entering a new stage of climate governance.

As a result, environment, climate risk, low-carbon, energy conservation and carbon reduction are becoming the new global consensus and the universal ESG standards. IoT solutions are leaders in the energy conservation and carbon reduction fields because of smart measurement of energy consumption, flexible data collection, visibility, controllability and scientific decision-making.

Tuya, an IoT development platform service provider, is taking on its own approach in the sustainability initiative. Tuya released a mini program that is suitable for all households to help everyone save energy in even smarter and easier ways.

The program monitors household electricity consumption in real time and is embedded with energy-saving tactics. Users accurately trace the electricity consumption of each appliance or area at home and are notified when electricity usage is unnecessary. For example, the mini program will push a lights-off notification to users when it's time to sleep and if the lights are not turned off.

Tuya and its global partners developed a smart metering socket. Users can set the timing, turn it on/off remotely and control electrical appliance switches through sensors to reduce energy consumption. The smart metering socket saved almost $200 million in electric bills for users worldwide – the equivalent of planting 40 million trees per year.

Tuya's smart motion sensor light switch solution supports shifting between manual and automatic sensing modes, allowing Tuya's partners to build smart switches that are energy-efficient and user-friendly. In automatic mode, the solution supports customized settings such as sensitivity and delayed action. In manual mode, it supports light color, white light adjustments and countdown functions.

Tuya also collaborated with iHelios, a U.K.-based company specializing in heating and integrated property control systems. With Tuya, iHelios launched a household heating system that saved consumers more than 30% on their electric bills. Reduced electric bills means reduced energy consumption. The collaboration not only experienced success in energy conservation and carbon reduction, but it also brought a 40% increase in number of customers for iHelios.

Tuya's IoT capabilities bring sustainable value and create solutions for energy conservation and carbon reduction. Technology does not require users to change their previous behavior and habits. Rather, it allows people to achieve a greener lifestyle more intuitively.
