In the “as-a-Service” age, including the big catch-all of Anything-as-a-Service (XaaS), organizations far and wide continue pursuing the adoption of as-a-Services in order to best deliver tech-centric innovations. Really capitalizing on the “Anything” part of XaaS, these adoptions can range from SaaS (News - Alert) as the typical go-to, as well as others including IT-as-a-Service (ITaaS), Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS), Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS), and others such as Business-Process-Management-as-a-Service (BPMaas), Function-as-a-Service (FaaS), and telco-focused Unified-Communications-as-a-Service (UCaaS). Heck, video game developers even utilize Games-as-a-Service (GaaS) to cater to the always-online gamer community for enthusiasts like myself. XaaS almost feels omnipresent, which is why another example here is highly relevant: Sensing-as-a-Service, known as or SEaaS or S2aaS.
In short, Sensing-as-a-Service middleware offers consumers access to data generated by IoT devices owned by other entities, wherein they are charged for whatever amount of sensor data is used. So it comes as no surprise that companies are looking to carpe diem, so to speak, the potential Sensing-as-a-Service holds.
SmartSense by Digi, part of Digi International (News - Alert), is one such company. And yesterday, it was SmartSense that officially announced the launch of its IoT Sensing-as-a-Service open platform.
This new IoT Sensing-as-a-Service enables SmartSense to configure its IoT sensing and monitoring solutions for smooth interoperability with third-party sensing devices and management systems. This platform strategy’s three main pillars highlight streamlined data extraction, maximized hardware investments, and seamless compatibility for third parties, as mentioned.
The long-story-short of each of those:
First, the streamlined extraction of IoT Sensing and monitoring (i.e. tasks, incident occurrences and corresponding actions, checklists, temperature readings, etc.) is performed with API integrations for use in enterprises’ other applications.
With maximized hardware investments, customers are assured that they can maximize the ROI of their existing tech stack by removing silos and integrating new architectures (software and hardware) with SmartSense’s solutions.
Finally, SmartSense uses a specific certification process to integrate sensing devices that enable the rapid services customers need for use cases not part of the SmartSense core offering.
In total, this new SmartSense platform will yield valuable data sets and open the way for cost-savings and more.
