ESG in IoT: Semtech Furthers Commitments to Global Sustainability

By Alex Passett June 01, 2023

ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) initiatives – conceived to clear the air (pun intended) of complex environmental and societally related issues – prove quite important for corporations. In the context of “a more stakeholder-centric approach to doing business” (per Diligent), a strong ESG framework takes into account various global nuances and the standards to which corporations can adhere to best show (not just tell) that their operations reflect a commitment to sustainability.

The long-story-short of it? Proper execution of ESG is basically a win-win-win situation across industries; environmentally conscious practices, first and foremost, are put into effect, and corporations also reap benefits vis-à-vis reputational gains, attracting more investors, and ideally fostering long-term innovation. (And of course, focuses on ESG resonate with tons of consumers and corporations’ employees alike; many, in fact, will only engage preferences-wise with brands that prioritize ESG.)

And speaking of ESG strategies “across industries,” this is, without a doubt, applicable to the Internet of Things (IoT).

In the context of IoT, ESG considerations include reducing e-waste and the promotion of efficient energy solutions. It can literally be broken down by the letters, themselves:

Semtech, a supplier of high-performance semiconductors, cloud services and robust IoT systems, is very much aware of how crucial transparency in respect to ESG. That’s why Semtech recently released its inaugural Corporate Sustainability report.

“I am excited to present Semtech’s first Corporate Sustainability report,” stated Julie McGee, Senior Vice President and Chief ESG Officer at Semtech. “It reflects precisely how we commit to advancing the global sustainability agenda and align with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs).”

Semtech products contribute to said agenda by enabling customers to deliver ESG-powered solutions that help address energy management, natural resource reduction, pollution control and infrastructure efficiencies.

Prime example of this, to name a couple? Semtech’s LPWAN/LoRa analog and mixed-signal integrity products that help lower the power used by data center networks, as well as Semtech’s Advanced Protection series that home in on protecting circuitry to extend product life and limit undue e-waste.

“Our vision is to deliver high-quality, innovative solutions that enable a smarter, more connected planet,” McGee continued. “Semtech thrives at the forefront of developing products for environmental and social good. We’ll continue to expand our efforts as a combined company to help to create a better world, one ESG step at a time.”
