Minnesota Vikings Turn to Zebra for Player Performance Analysis

NFL fans expect the players on their favorite teams to be in tip-top shape every game day. They also expect their teams to have a proper game plan in place that will help them win. Rightly so, considering fans pay to see their favorite team win every week.

Therefore, it is up to organizations in the NFL to keep track of the health of their players to get the most out of their game plans. Of course, that is easier said than done considering some “injuries” or other health issues often go under the radar, and NFL players typically do not mention anything that might seem minor just to be certain they get onto the field.

This is why it is important to incorporate some form of advanced tracking technology to collect this data.

Zebra, an innovator at the front line of business with solutions and partners that deliver a performance edge, is doing just that by applying the Zebra MotionWorks Sport system RFID tracking technology to capture player and ball data for each of the Minnesota Vikings’ practice sessions this season, uncovering insights that inform game plans, evaluate player performance and contextualize player health and safety.

The Zebra MotionWorks Sport system employs RFID tags, which are integrated within footballs, affixed to shoulder pads and incorporated into practice shirts and compression gear. These tags transmit real-time location system data to receivers strategically placed in stadiums and practice facilities.

Zebra's tracking technology records various metrics, including player speed, acceleration, deceleration, distance covered per play and overall, ball orientation, player proximity to the ball and formations, among other data points.

The Vikings leverage this information to perform extensive calculations and analyses on each player's performance in every practice repetition throughout the season.

“Zebra’s tracking solution provides us with the information we need to make educated decisions about on-field performance, player workloads and return-to-play decisions," said Tyler Williams, vice president, player health and performance, Minnesota Vikings.

Zebra has been the NFL's Official Real-Time Location Solutions Provider for a decade, supporting the Next Gen Stats platform that enhances how fans, media, and teams perceive the game. They track every NFL game, including international ones, the NFL Combine, and International Combine.

Now, the Minnesota Vikings, through the new partnership, can take advantage of the tracking technology during practices. The end result? Vikings fans hope for better game day performances that live up to the reputation of the Gjallarhorn.
