The Rebirth of IoT Hardware Thanks to AIoT

By Carl Ford March 03, 2025

Before we get started, it’s important to put things in perspective. The use of low-cost IoT solutions – what friends call “cheap and cheerful” – will still be most of the market. It has the legacy already and extraordinarily little of AIoT needs to be at the endpoint in order for benefits to be achieved. However, somewhere in the mix, the addition of artificial intelligence can bring new benefits.

Digital Twins brought about machine learning and has evolved past the point with added sensory data, such that I prefer to call them Digital Angels, as AIoT integrates Artificial Intelligence (AI) into Internet of Things (IoT) devices. Where on the edge this will happen will be based on where the most benefit will be gained by aggregation.

Tires are a good example of a combination of economics and when AI will be supervised. A car owner needs to be notified when a tire is low on air and, often, now on the driver’s display is the status (aggregation) of all four tires. A fleet manager will want to know, in aggregate, if the tires on the fleet match the contracted service levels agreements and other key performance indicators like, mean time to repair and others. That’s where AI can play a huge role.

Enhancing Device Functionality and Value

Incorporating AI into IoT devices significantly elevates their functionality and value proposition. By processing data locally, AIoT devices can:

Industry Adoption and Market Dynamics

The rapid adoption of AIoT is transforming various industries:

This widespread integration is prompting businesses to rethink their product roadmaps and application architectures to accommodate AI capabilities.

Quantifying the AIoT Market Opportunity

Recognizing the profound impact of AIoT, research organizations like Transforma Insights are actively quantifying the market opportunities it presents. Their work involves analyzing adoption rates, assessing the qualitative impacts on various sectors, and forecasting future trends to provide businesses with actionable insights.

Conclusion

Look for “new and improved” to be applied to gateways, video monitoring, and edge solutions to be the logical first movers.

The fusion of AI and IoT is ushering in a new era of intelligent devices capable of autonomous decision-making and enhanced functionalities. As this trend accelerates, it is poised to reshape product development strategies, application architectures, and market dynamics across multiple industries.
