Hoopo Demos the Synergies Possible with IoT

By Carl Ford July 16, 2025

Founded in 2016, Hoopo specializes in energy-efficient tracking systems designed to assist companies and institutions in managing airport ground equipment, supply chain logistics, waste management, and transportation logistics. Hoopo operates globally, including in the United States, Europe, and Japan.

The company's solutions leverage low-power wide-area networks (LPWAN) to provide efficient asset tracking without significant battery consumption, or the high costs associated with traditional GPS tracking systems.

Hoopo's technology enables efficient management of business logistics operations and supply chains by creating data visibility across asset locations. Its location-based data helps prevent bottlenecks, enables asset maintenance, and provides real-time tracking through cloud software and interoperable hardware. Edge-embedded algorithms combined with LPWA technologies allow the system to choose the most appropriate technology based on specific use cases and asset behavior.

Hoopo's hoopoSense is a multi-mode tracking device that utilizes several location technologies and LPWA LoRa communication protocols to ensure reliable positioning and long-range connectivity while maintaining minimal power consumption. These devices operate between LPWA LoRa and cellular communication networks and are mountable on any powered or unpowered container, generating location tracking and movement reports.

The IoT Business Impact Award is for the partnership between Hoopo and ZIM Integrated Shipping Services.

ZIM Integrated Shipping Services Ltd. (ZIM) offers services that include dry cargo services, reefer cargo, project cargo and inland transport. ZIM also enables digital services to keep the customer engaged, including myZIM personal area, electric Bill of Lading (eB/L) services, ZIMonitor, eZIM, eZquote, and other mobile applications. ZIM also provides point-to-point, schedule by line, schedule by port, schedule by vessel, and shipping trades and lines services under schedule services. The company operates through a fleet of vessels and containers across the globe.

The Hoopo/ZIM partnership includes a large-scale IoT-based tracking deployment that is transforming dry container operations. The measurable results include outcomes across multiple dimensions of operational efficiency and cost reduction.

For example, developing the automated Gate Event Detection, ZIM transitioned from manual tracking of container gate movements to automation. Using Hoopo’s tracking system, In-Gate and Out-Gate detection eliminated the need for depot personnel to input container events manually, reducing labor hours and significantly improving data accuracy across the network.

Hoopo’s tracker provides seamless Bill of Lading (BL) integration, linking each dry container to its BL. ZIM then providers the customer with real-time shipment visibility and eliminates the manual effort involved in connecting physical assets with digital records. The result is a streamlined documentation process and more efficient service delivery.

This also reduces empty container runs, as access to real-time container location and status enables ZIM to strategically optimize container repositioning, leading to a notable reduction in empty container movements. This directly reduces fuel consumption, handling costs, and the environmental impact associated with non-revenue moves.

Hoopo’s smarter triangulation enables ZIM to intelligently reassign empty containers after unloading. Instead of returning them to a depot, containers can be directly routed from one customer to the next, minimizing unnecessary transportation legs. This triangulation efficiency improves container utilization and reduces both costs and turnaround times.

Hoopo’s deployment also reduced container losses and misplacements. Previously, ZIM experienced operational inefficiencies due to containers being misplaced or unaccounted for, particularly at inland sites or customer locations. Real-time tracking has significantly reduced asset loss incidents, improved recovery, and lowered costs associated with replacement and lengthy investigations.

With real-time visibility into container activity, including when containers are emptied, ZIM has accelerated the recovery and redeployment process. This has led to higher utilization rates, reduced idle time, and optimized fleet rotation, allowing the company to operate more effectively with fewer containers.

Hoopo’s solar-powered, multi-sensor trackers are maintenance-free and built to last for 15 years. This design eliminates the need for battery replacements or ongoing servicing, dramatically reducing TCO and enabling cost-effective scaling across tens of thousands of containers.

ZIM cargo security door status detection enables ZIM to monitor unauthorized access events in real time, helping prevent theft and tampering. This feature has enhanced cargo security, supported compliance, and helped reduce insurance claims and liability exposure. It also provides clear event records for dispute resolution.

The data collected from Hoopo’s trackers powers ZIM’s fleet intelligence platform, which includes custom alerts, geofencing, and predictive analytics. This shift from delayed EDI updates to real-time intelligence has enabled more intelligent decision-making in depot management, route planning, and customer service operations.

The customer experience has been greatly improved, with customers benefiting from direct, transparent access to shipment status, and reduced support inquiries or manual investigations.

Overall, Hoopo’s solution has lowered internal service costs while improving ZIM’s overall customer satisfaction and retention.
