Sierra Wireless Increases Market Share with Acquisition of AnyDATA M2M Assets

By Michael Guta October 14, 2013

Sierra Wireless has the broadest machine-to-machine (M2M) portfolio in the world with positions in key M2M segments. Although it is recognized as the No. 1 global market share provider in this sector, the company continues to acquire key assets to ensure it doesn't relinquish the lead. The company recently acquired AnyDATA Corporation, a provider of wireless Internet devices and solutions for mobile network operators and enterprise solutions providers worldwide, to purchase its M2M embedded module and modem assets.

These and other acquisitions by Sierra Wireless are designed to take advantage of new market opportunities around the world that have higher implementation rates of information and communications technologies (ICT), such as 4G and LTE.

In addition to the M2M embedded module and modem assets, the acquisition gives Sierra wireless 16 sales and engineering staff from AnyDATA Korea to transfer to the newly established Sierra Wireless Korea entity located in Seoul. This allows the company to take advantage of one of the most technologically advanced countries in the world. Although AnyDATA only generated around $10 million in revenue during the last 12 months, the strategic benefit the company provides is invaluable for future growth in the region and the industry.

This acquisition gives Sierra Wireless a more robust overall sales, R&D, and customer support capabilities. Its share of the Korean market will improve as it continues to build long-term customer relationships and use established channels to continue growing by using the sales, support, and R&D teams in the country.

The assets were purchased for $5.9 million and the transaction is expected to close at the end of October 2013.

"With significant market share and established sales channels in Korea, and a proven engineering team, we believe that the AnyDATA M2M business represents an important addition to Sierra Wireless. This acquisition broadens our global reach, enhances our technical capabilities, and expands our market share leadership. We are very pleased to welcome the AnyDATA customers and employees to Sierra Wireless," said Jason Cohenour, president and CEO of Sierra Wireless, in a statement.

AnyDATA provides wireless solutions with design and manufacturing of wireless modules and devices including tablets, mobile hotspots, USB modems, smartphones, wireless GPS devices and mobile-to-mobile tracking solutions. The products the company produces are distributed through wireless carriers and OEMs, and have been certified in 45 countries by more than 56 carriers.
