M2M technology keeps evolving, and this week is no exception. Here are some of the top stories we’ve been covering this week.
Sierra Wireless has increased its already impressive M2M market share with its acquisition of AnyDATA for $5.9 million.
"With significant market share and established sales channels in Korea, and a proven engineering team, we believe that the AnyDATA M2M business represents an important addition to Sierra Wireless. This acquisition broadens our global reach, enhances our technical capabilities, and expands our market share leadership. We are very pleased to welcome the AnyDATA customers and employees to Sierra Wireless," said Jason Cohenour, president and CEO of Sierra Wireless.
The future of M2M looks brighter and brighter. Infonetics research predicts over four billion M2M connections by 2017.
“M2M is one of the fastest-growing major new segments for service providers,” said Infonetics analyst Godfrey Chua. “We forecast global revenue from M2M services to more than double between 2012 and 2017, from just under $15 billion to $31 billion.”
But to do that, customers need to actually have hardware that can connect their devices to mobile networks. And with networks like AT&T phasing out 2G, Telit has stepped in with a 3G-only module.
“The 3G-only variant of the UL865 features a VQFN packaging which is versatile and cost effective in high-volume production situations,” said Telit chief product officer Felix Marchal. “This further contributes to the product’s effectiveness as a compact, cost-effective solution for 3G mobile-data applications in North America including usage based insurance (UBI) OBDII pluggable devices. This new product is particularly important because together with the CL865-DUAL, a fully compatible CDMA module, it offers our American customers the opportunity to design an application once and deploy it either on CDMA or HSPA networks in that market.”
