IoT Evolution World Week in Review: Microsoft, Nokia, Haemonetics

By

Hey folks, hope you’ve had a nice week on IoT Evolution World. I spent most of the time getting ready for next week’s IoT Evolution Expo in Las Vegas. We’ll be kickin’ apps and taking names all week, and I hope to see many of you there.

While all that was going on, we had some big news this week. First up, Microsoft made its long-awaited play to take over the IoT with the Windows 10 IoT Core. The first release, issued August 10, is prepared for development on Raspberry Pi 2 and the MinnowBoard Max. Developers can visit the Windows IoT Dev Center online to choose a target board, then provision the board, acquire the tools, and get started making something good. The release requires a development machine running the July 29 release of Windows 10, build 10240 and Visual Studio 2015.

Meanwhile, Nokia dropped a gauntlet in front of the whole industry with its third annual Open Innovation Challenge, which began August 3 in Finland and will close September 20, and this year will focus on the IoT. Nokia Networks said in the announcement that it is seeing “an explosion of possibilities for consumers, industries and societies enabled by the IoT.” This year’s challenge offers developers an opportunity to collaborate with the company on game-changing ideas for the future of the IoT.

The IoT is protecting the global blood supply better than ever before, thanks to HaemoCloud, a new product from Haemonetics. This IoT software platform is designed to connect all of the company’s devices and software, leading to a total management of the human blood supply chain. The product enables blood management devices to communicate with hospital information systems and provide real-time device operational data for service and support.

At the Black Hat conference in Las Vegas, HYPR Corp revealed a vulnerability that would allow hackers to use Android phones to steal users’ fingerprints. Luckily, in addition to showing off the vulnerability, the researchers also unveiled a repair.
