New Cellular Modem Certified for 14.4MBPS by FCC

By

Cellular connectivity is largely regarded as the critical signal for mass-market IoT networking, and the technology is constantly getting better.

Zoom Telephonics, a modems and gateways manufacturer, announced August 27 that it has moved the needle a bit farther. The company has achieved PTCRB and FCC 15B certification for its new model 4575 14.4 Mbps cellular modem with GPS. Zoom said it will submit the modem to AT&T in September certification by that brand, a requirement for companies that want to purchase volume AT&T cellular service plans at wholesale rates.

This is the first product for the company in a new line of ZoomCell cellular modems that will be released this year for AT&T and other GSM services. Zoom will offer models with at 3.6 Mbps, 14.4 Mbps, and 100 Mbps (LTE) speeds. Each model will have metal-cased and uncased versions and will include serial and USB ports, a 30-pin header for optional plug-in to a motherboard, a micro-SIM slot and a high-performance, flexible on-board switching power supply. All models use a PTCRB and FCC 15C certified Huawei LGA module with built-in Qualcomm cellular radio technology.

“These cellular modems are part of a major Zoom initiative to design and build modems, gateways, and multi-sensor cellular products that are certified by AT&T and Verizon,” said Frank Manning, President and CEO, Zoom. “We expect to sell our cellular modems primarily through distributors who specialize in this type of product, and we expect to be announcing important distributor agreements in the near future.”

Zoom’s cellular modems are designed to get equipment designers and value-added resellers to market fast with already certified low-cost modems, the company said in a release.

It’s important to keep moving ahead, with certifications under official standards making every player in the marketplace confident in performance and reliability. Look for even more advanced communications hardware to move the industry down the line.
