The Blind Side of IOT: These Are the Droids You are Looking For

By

On September 1, ThingWorx ran a webinar with us where they featured Yankee Candle's IOT Solution. Candidly, it was amazing and if you have not listened, I strongly suggest you go listen to it now.

More importantly than this is the adoption rate I am seeing in companies you would never think of as IoT candidates. I mean Yankee Candle? If I asked you to list possible interested enterprises for IoT, I doubt they would have made your list.

But not only is the implementation logical and well designed, it represents a new revenue source.

Likewise, I have been talking to delegates at our shows that are in the process of retooling their entire companies. These are not IoT Greenfields, but companies that have legacy policies decades old that they are looking to disrupt for the new IoT opportunities to extend or change their products into services.

Another set of delegates just sent me a copy of their lease for a new 3D printing manufacturer they are creating. For them, the Sikorsky anecdote of making parts for an Alfa Romeo rang true. They aren't looking to build a business out of giant manufacturing but in changing tool and die into an IoT on-demand business.

What do these companies have in common? The only answer is a vision that IOT can help them improve and evolve into better businesses.

If you have a boss that cannot imagine the new environment, have them listen to the ThingWorx webinar. If they still don't get it, send me an email, and I will find a way to inspire them.

I often talk about the bricklayers who build the Cathedral. In the case of the National Cathedral, the brick layers have permanent employment because of maintenance. Going forward, even that story will be impacted by IoT solutions. Get inspired and keep reading. We are changing the world not one sensor at a time, but in great waves.
