IoT? The Results are In

By

Do you trust the IoT’s security to protect your personal data? If not, then it appears that you are not alone.

Auth0, a universal platform for authentication and authorization, recently published the results of a survey conducted to see how consumers felt regarding security measures tied to the IoT. Shockingly, or maybe not, nearly 52 percent of consumers believe that these products do not have the necessary security in place.

On the development side of the IoT coin, when developers were asked if they have ever felt pressured to rush an application to market despite security concerns, over 85 percent of developers admitted that they had.

“With data breaches from major companies appearing constantly as headline news, consumers are cognizant that security is a major issue, but they may not have insight into why that is,” said Jon Gelsey, CEO, Auth0.

Developers have echoed and even amplified the consumer concern for better security. A staggering 90 percent of the surveyed customers believed that the IoT devices on the market currently don’t have the necessary security in place.

However, the lack of security in the IoT isn’t stopping consumers. Nearly half (49 percent) of respondents don’t trust having their personal and private data tied to IoT applications, but they continue to use these devices. Consumers are aware of the general security vulnerabilities that have been associated with this category of products and applications, but are still willing to put their personal data at risk. This shows how the demand for these technologies is compromising the need for proper security.

Millennials were nearly split on future use of IoT devices, with 54 percent claiming that they did not plan to purchase or regularly use these devices within the next two years. Participants aged 35-54 were slightly more skeptical, with nearly 63 percent not interested in buying IoT devices over the next two years.

There should be a slowed progress, innovation and growth in the IoT space, with consumers and developers wary to use and support these technologies due to the lack of security offered for their personal and private health and also home and financial data. However, nearly 35 percent of survey respondents claimed that the breaches of major brands have not had much of an effect on the trust or consumer interest in these brands. This shows consumers’ overall loyalty to the brands that they’ve come to rely on for their everyday purchases.

Whether you are for or against placing your personal information in the questionable IoT security, one thing is for sure. The IoT is here to stay!
