IoT Time Video: Intel Security Evangelist Gary Davis Terrifies IoT Evolution Expo

By

In this IoT Evolution Expo keynote, Gary Davis, Chief Consumer Security Evangelist, Intel Security, scares attendees into thinking seriously about IoT security.

We are fast moving into a hyper connected society – and 5G will be a fundamental foundation. It is easy to think of 5G networks as mainly a quantitative evolution similar to previous transitions, such as higher bitrate, lower latency and more devices. But 5G security will just be a qualitative leap forward to meet the demands of a Networked Society.

This session will cover the unique security challenges from a large number of connected devices.

•5G is expected to drive IoT. Adding connectivity for billions of new devices will open new security threats. Currently victims of ransomware are locked out of their PC or smartphone. With 5G, ransomware victims could be locked out of their house and car, and many other connected devices. Multiplying the number of connected devices equals opportunity for attacks such as DDoS. Bottom line — more devices connected at higher speeds results in increased risk.

•Increased data transfer speeds implies higher threats of malicious file transfers. With high transfer rates, data exfiltration or large malicious file transfers could be more easily missed.

•More severe consequences of security breaches due to the nature of technology enabled by 5G include remote surgery and driverless cars. The consequences of security breaches in these examples could be particularly dire, even life threatening.

The goal is to ensure that consumers maintain a high level of trust with these cutting-edge technologies so that the entire IoT movement can continue to thrive.

And, next week, we'll have a special IoT Time podcast episode featuring Gary Davis talking through some of the practical implications of the issues he raises in this keynote, and some of the potential solutions.
