IoT Evolution Expo Faculty Speaks: Christian Legare of Silicon Labs on Security

By

The IoT Evolution Expo is coming up fast, and we interviewed our speaking faculty to get a bit of a preview of what to expect from the conference.

Here, we spoke to Christian Legare, Director, IoT OS Platform, Silicon Labs, who will be a featured speaker in the following sessions during the week of education:

IoT Security Basics

Putting a Framework on Connectivity Requirements

Read on for his thoughts:

IoT Evolution: What will be some key points you plan to hit in your sessions?
Christian Legare: IoT Edge devices hardware and software are not complicated they are complex. It is the sum of many different expertise and its requires a good knowledge of many technologies to develop a product and a system to produce a positive business cases.

IoTE: What new insights can attendees expect to take home from your sessions?
CL: Mickey Mouse in Fantasia tried to play apprentice sorcerer by mastering skills he did not fully understand. Don’t make the same mistake. Use the right experts for the righ problems.

IoTE: Can you identify a few important trends influencing your sector of the IoT which will shape the path of the industry?
CL: Lights is being shed on the Edge device and not only the cloud. It will change the dynamic and pace of IoT integration

IoTE: Why these?
CL: Because this is where the data is being generated. Without it, there is no IoT

IoTE: What are the biggest challenges facing the IoT?
CL: Too much software in too small devices. We cannot put gateways everywhere.

IoTE: What are some important tools needed to overcome them?
CL: Bigger, Faster microcontrollers at affordable cost and running on batteries. More software abstraction to accelerate time to market. Software developers need to rely on Edge Device platform that take care of the hardware peripherals, the communication stack(s) and the security of the device lifecycle.

IoTE: Which vertical markets have the most to gain from IoT implementation?
CL: Manufacturing

IoTE: Which are leading and which are still behind the adoption curve?
CL: Home automation and other Consumer products plus Building automation are leading.

IoTE: What session(s) (other than yours) are you most looking forward to attending at the Expo? Why?
CL: Intro to Blockchain
Four Fog-based IoT Use Cases
LoRaWAN Market: Network Operators Deploying LoRaWAN Services From Anywhere in the World
Security at the Edge of IoT
Putting a Framework on Connectivity Requirements
IIoT and AI: Thinking Linking Things
