Aclara, a member of ESCO Technologies’ utilities solutions group, has acquired the assets of Metrum Technologies LLC, a smart grid solutions provider based in Waco, Texas, including the research and development center in Dallas.
It will reportedly add cellular solutions to its existing powerline and RF mesh.
“I believe the combination of Metrum’s and Aclara’s technology platforms will enable a best-in-class offering of cellular, RF and powerline communications technologies for our utility customers,” said Steve Swenke, CEO at Metrum, commenting on the acquisition.
Terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.
Metrum’s high-bandwidth, secure IP- based advanced metering products have been deployed by over 350 utilities throughout the United States, and its state-of-the-art communications products and devices are in great demand, while Aclara has an outstanding reputation for providing exceptional smart grid solutions to all three utility segments.
Thus, according to Brad Kitterman, president at Aclara, adding Metrum Technologies’ cellular-based AMI and endpoint automation technologies will serve to enhance and complement Aclara’s existing offerings, enabling its customers to balance bandwidth requirements with cost.
The acquisition is also significant given that power companies are using real-time wireless cellular communications for a wide range of activities, from voice and wireless e-mail to meter reading.
Aclara, part of the utility solutions group of ESCO Technologies Inc., will fully support the next phase of the Green Button initiative, Connect My Data, which allows utilities to automatically deliver usage data to consumers through third-party applications that help them understand and analyze it.
Green Button is a voluntary effort by utilities across the country, celebrated by the U.S. Department of Energy and the White House.
