IoT Evolution World Week in Review: SAS, OTA, AT&T

By Ken Briodagh April 23, 2016

Hello, my IoT friends. This is the IoT Evolution World Week in Review. I’ve been at the SAS (News - Alert) Global Forum in Las Vegas this week—and there’s ton of good stuff I’ll be sharing with you over the next few days. Next week, I’ll be at Collision in New Orleans, so watch out for news from there, too. We’ll get to the news in just a bit, but first a quick reminder about the IoT Evolution Expo in Las Vegas, July 11 to 14. If you want to get in on it as a sponsor or exhibitor, now’s the time, so hook up with Matt Gleeson, our Biz Dev maestro.

And now, the news:

SAS is well-known for its data analytics chops, having been doing it now for 40 years. Well, the company, with the announcement this week from its SAS Global Forum in Las Vegas, is bringing its power to bear on the IoT in a big way with its cloud-ready SAS Viya, a next-generation high-performance analytics and visualization architecture.

For the IoT to grow, bringing current college students into the industry is a mission critical function for enterprises and developers. To that end, San Jose State University’s Department of Computer Science brought students to present technology solutions to real-world problems at IoT connectivity developer, Aeris’ (News - Alert) headquarters.

Miami-Dade County is on the Smart City bandwagon, and residents should start preparing themselves for all the sweet, sweet technology. The County has joined the AT&T Smart City initiative to bring improvements in public safety, transportation and traffic as part of the company’s larger effort to create impactful solutions for cities, counties and communities across the U.S.

In a guest post this week, David Gurle, CEO, Symphony, wrote about how IoT professionals should manage the IoT to ensure that we receive the information truly needed – rather than whatever happens to show up on our myriad of communications channels.

This week on the IoT Time Podcast, I spoke with John Horn (News - Alert), CEO, Ingenu, and keynote speaker at IoT Evolution Expo, to talk about IoT standards, connectivity and the importance of bringing partners together to build the IoT, and I sit down with Craig Spiezle, Executive Director, Founder & President, Online Trust Alliance, to talk about trust in the IoT, IoT standards, and what government's role will be.

There’s plenty more to read, listen to and watch, so visit us on IoT Evolution World for all the IoT news, my friends. Keep the IoT Evolution Expo in Fort Lauderdale in your calendar. Also, please get in touch with us when you have stories. As always, if you have questions, comments, input or abuse, please send it to our editorial director, Ken Briodagh at kbriodagh@tmcnet.com or on Twitter (News - Alert) @KenBriodagh. Stay warm, my friends.
