IoT Evolution World Week in Review: Latin America, Mirai, U.S. Senate

By Ken Briodagh October 15, 2016

Hello my friends. I hope your October is going very well. Mine is going too fast for my taste, and it’s not slowing down this week by any means. Let’s try and catch up, shall we?

In the first of our lead stories this week, we looked at the Latin American and South American IoT markets, which have been under reported, but should not be underestimated. According to a Micromarket Monitor study, these markets can be expected to grow from $14.2 billion in 2013 to $44.4 billion by 2019, at a CAGR of 19.9 percent over that period.

In other news, if you’re not still worried about Mirai and similar IoT-focused attacks, you’re fooling yourself and no one else. If you’re not convinced, don’t worry there’s more to come. Akamai (News - Alert) Technologies, a provider of content delivery network (CDN) services, has published new research from its Threat Research team in which it has identified several recent attacks leveraging a 12-year old vulnerability in OpenSSH to compromise IoT devices.

In a great guest post from Jay Srinivasan, Sr. Director of Engineering at infiswift, the spotlight stayed on Mirai, the code for which has now been released as open source, which means we can expect more such attacks in future. He says that fact begs the question: What can we as the IoT community do to mitigate these types of attacks? He’s got a few possible answers.

And now, the news:
In a new report, Engine Advocacy and Tusk Ventures have graded U.S. Senate candidates on important issues related to technology and the IoT like Broadband Access, and Intellectual Property & Data Security. And the grades are not good.

Public and private partnerships are shaping up to be critical to the development of IoT executions and solutions for Smart City and Smart Transportation initiatives all over the world. (Honestly, I’m not sure that those two are different, but that’s another article.) The newest announcement of such a partnership came this week from Australia.

Semtech Corporation announced that its LoRa Wireless RF Technology is being used in a new low power, wide area network in London with the goal of fostering innovation by providing businesses with free access to a LoRaWAN-based LPWAN for IoT applications. The network is the largest LoRaWAN network in the U.K.

Oracle (News - Alert) will now offer its customers new connections to its Cloud via Verizon’s Secure Cloud Interconnect services, which will, the company hopes, enable enterprises to more easily move workloads to the Oracle Cloud.

This week on the IoT Time Podcast, I sat down with Scott Allen, CMO, FreeWave Technologies, to talk about Edge Computing, the IIoT and the future of Predictive Analytics and Data Science. Also, Ken is very worried about statistics for some reason. This episode is sponsored by the IoT Evolution Expo. To become a sponsor of IoT Time, please email or tweet me.

There’s plenty more to read, listen to and watch, so visit us on IoT Evolution World for all the IoT news, my friends. Now is the time to put into your calendar the next IoT Evolution Expo, to be held in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Also, please get in touch with us when you have stories. As always, if you have questions, comments, complaints or compliments, please send them to me, editorial director Ken Briodagh at kbriodagh@tmcnet.com or on Twitter (News - Alert) @KenBriodagh.
