Sober Drivers Win Prizes with New Connected Device

By Ken Briodagh May 20, 2015

Friends don’t let friends drive drunk. Now, thanks to a new connected platform, sober drivers can also win prizes in addition to not dying or killing someone in a drunk driving crash.

Breathometer, a developer of a wireless and portable breath analysis platform, and Kiip, a rewards platform that targets “achievement moments” in mobile games and apps, have teamed up to prevent drunk driving by rewarding the responsible. The new partnership has Kiip placing relevant rewards inside the Breathometer app aimed at incentivizing education and responsible choices around social drinking.

The way it works is pretty simple. A user blows into the sensor device. If they are determined to have a BAC over .04, half of the legal limit, the app will offer “Get Home Safe” and “Stay Nearby” features like deals on hotels or cab fares. If the user then takes advantage of the deals, and continues to use the app to confirm current BAC levels, new rewards will trigger.

“We look forward to celebrating consumers' smart choices," said Charles Michael Yim, CEO, Breathometer. “By harnessing the power of Kiip's reward network within our Breathometer app, we can deliver relevant offers at the right moments. This allows us to engage with other brands that complement the objectives of our Breathometer products.”

The goal is to help casual drinkers make better choices and stay safer, and it seems to be working. Since the launch of the first version of the app, more than 1.2 million tests have been done. By adding in the Kiip reward platform, users get relevant rewards during the most important moments, which increases the power of the sponsored content.

“Together, our companies can address real-time consumer needs, demonstrating how marketers should approach advertising in connected devices,” said Brian Wong, CEO, Kiip. “We're excited that this execution will help shape the future of advertising in a way that promotes well-being."

Stay thirsty, but don’t be stupid, my friends.
