Tata Power Launches IoT Based Asset Tracking Solution

By Shrey Fadia March 20, 2018

Earlier this month, Tata Power announced its launch of IoT based asset tracking and automation solutions enabled by Tata Communications.

Tata Power is also working with L&T Meters in Mumbai.

Tata Power has built an IoT AMI solution to provide power measurement parameters including instantaneous, load profile, tamper and billing information in a periodic manner.

The data will be then ingested into Tata power's Meter Data Management (MDM) system which will enable fast turnaround time of data provisioning to the system, lowering operational costs and improving reconciliation between distribution points and end customers.

Tata Power’s solution harnesses the data gathered from an internal Geographical Information System (GIS). This solution includes features like Geo Fence breach alerts and asset trace log periodically.

Ashok Sethi, COO and Executive Director of Tata Power, said, “We, at Tata Power, have always ensured that we are the lead adopters of technology. The asset tracking solution will enable Tata Power to improve its operational efficiency through tracking real-time movement of assets.”

Tata Communications has already deployed their IoT network across 38 cities in India, making it easier and cost-efficient for Tata Power to roll out their AMI solution across the country.

Tata Communications has pledged to invest over $100 million in 2 years to advance many IoT applications across India. VS Shridhar Senior VP and Head of IoT, Tata Communications, said, “Tata Communications has already lit the network for IoT across 38 cities in India and we plan to touch over 400 million customers in the first phase itself. It’s been an honor to work with Tata Power, shoulder-to-shoulder, in lighting up the Asset-tracking solution and adding momentum to this revolution in India.”

Tata Power is considered India’s largest integrated power company and is achieving success in creating an international presence. The company along with their subsidiaries has installed gross generation capacity of 10757 MW.
