Microsoft Launches CityNext to Jumpstart Smart Cities

By

Microsoft recently announced that it is launching CityNext, an initiative for helping governments and citizens re-imagine what is next for their cities, along with Civic Resource Group International (CRGI). Through CityNext, Microsoft and CRGI plan to help city leaders to do “new-with-less” by combining technology with IoT solutions to connect governments, businesses, and citizens with civic services. The main idea is to make cities more cost-efficient, sustainable and thriving communities.

Civic Resource Group International has the goal of providing digital solutions for the broad public sector by designing smarter public transportation, environmental solutions, utilities, tourism and economic development.

“We are thrilled to partner with CRGI on Microsoft CityNext. Microsoft prioritizes putting people and partners first in our initiatives and CityNext is no different,” said Rob Bernard, Chief Environmental Strategist, Microsoft. “Even though cities are feeling the economic strain, we believe a new era of innovation will create opportunities for people to utilize technology to accomplish what they never thought possible. We're inspired by our diverse partner ecosystem and know that together we can help cities realize their full potential."

Smart city development is critical to moving forward in the IoT. The human population is congregating in cities in ever greater numbers, and IoT solutions are necessary to help develop more efficient utility and population management plans. This is yet another sign that Microsoft understands how important this development is for its business and the industry.

“Our partnering on Microsoft CityNext bolsters our commitment to champion ‘Smart Cities’ globally,” said Dr. Gregory Curtin, Founder and CEO, CRGI. “Microsoft's cloud-based solutions help make our CivicConnect platform and applications real transformation agents for any city aspiring to become a Smart City. Sustainability, efficiency, connectivity are at the core of Smart Cities, and the new mobile-citizen is seeking to engage and connect with government and public services in the manner, time and place they desire.”
