IoT Evolution World Week in Review: Dyn, IIC, Nuance

By

Welcome to the IoT Evolution Week in Review, and happy November. Security has been a main topic yet again this week, and we also saw quite a bit of international expansion, so make sure you click through all the news from the week. But first, here are the highlights.

In the first of our lead stories this week, I discovered a post on the security blog Malware Must Die by @unixfreaxjp from October 28. Here we find another DDoS botnet vulnerability aimed at the IoT specifically, and this time, ready for IPv6. The investigator calls it Linux/IRCTelnet, which looks like it is a new IRC botnet ELF malware that can be and likely is being used for performing DDoS attacks through IoT devices via IRC botnet.

Our second lead story features the Industrial Internet Consortium, the global member supported organization that promotes the accelerated growth of the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), has made some cool moves to advance its mission with some key partnerships, most notably with the IoT Acceleration Consortium and the IoT Evolution Expo.

In a great post from Cynthia Artin, our Special Correspondent, she has dug into the Dyn breaches with an in-depth Q&A with the VP and CTO of Corero, Dave Larson. Artin and Corero look at how this is all impacting the IoT landscape given increasing data showing the DDoS attack was mounted by the Mirai botnet, which includes smart home Wi-Fi routers and IP video cameras which began sending massive numbers of requests to Dyn's DNS service after the code for the Mirai botnet was released publicly.

And now, the news:
According to reports, the City of San Antonio is set to work with Cradlepoint, a cloud-based network solutions developer, to scale up its traffic management system to meet high population growth expectations by leveraging IoT and Smart City strategies.

Honeywell has announced a $15 million smart grid project with Connexus Energy, Minnesota’s largest customer-owned electric cooperative, to deploy smart grid technology to improve electricity service and reliability, and help the utility’s 130,000 members better manage their energy consumption.

Relayr has announced it is partnering with HSB, part of Munich Re, to craft customized insurance products designed to provide financial confidence for companies making IoT investments. HSB has 150 years of experience insuring the equipment and technology used by businesses; its work with relayr represents the insurance industry's first industrial IoT-specific set of offerings.

Nokia has conducted a trial using NB-IoT technology on the commercial 4G network belonging to Finnish operator Sonera with the goal of accelerating the IoT ecosystem and providing greater IoT device support.

This week on the IoT Time Podcast, I sat down with Kenn Harper (no relation), VP, Nuance Devices and Ecosystem, to talk about voice control in the IoT, natural language processing and understanding and Ken throws some deep shade at Siri and Google Now. This episode is sponsored by the IoT Evolution Expo. To become a sponsor of IoT Time, please email or tweet me.

There’s plenty more to read, listen to and watch, so visit us on IoT Evolution World for all the IoT news, my friends. Now is the time to put into your calendar the next IoT Evolution Expo, to be held in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Also, please get in touch with us when you have stories. As always, if you have questions, comments, complaints or compliments, please send them to me, editorial director Ken Briodagh at [email protected] or on Twitter @KenBriodagh.
