Welcome to the IoT Evolution Week in Review, my friends. This week, we’ve been talking about the payments via IoT, Canadian Telecoms, big money investments and more. Let’s get into it, shall we?
In our lead story, Visa has recently announced it has signed 13 new partners to participate in its token service provider program, as the payments industry shifts from plastic to digital and broader access to new standards, such as tokenization, is needed, particularly for IoT payments. With demand expected to increase for payments to be embedded into a growing number of devices, services and experiences, Visa has built out a global network of partners to offer secure, digital payment token services and ensure that, regardless of form factor, an IoT device, appliance, wearable or beyond, can become a more secure place for commerce.
We had a great guest post from Cynthia Artin, our Special Correspondent, in which she talks about how most devices are not IoT-ready, and prematurely implementing systems without ensuring the connected endpoints are secure, manageable, controllable and economically feasible to maintain can be the downfall of even the most inspired project. She writes that even choosing the right cloud makes a big difference, and given the plethora of choices across all these domains, often the enterprises and organizations contemplating IoT and IIoT roll-outs are paralyzed, wishing to ensure they make the right choices, short and long term.
And now, the news: The Government of Canada has said it will set out to encourage the advancement of telecommunication services by putting a focus on what it is saying are the three things that matter most to Canadian families and businesses: high-quality networks, broad-reaching coverage and affordable prices.
In a launch from so-called stealth mode, Armis, an enterprise IoT security company, has announced $17 million in funding from Sequoia Capital and Tenaya Capital.
OpenText, a global Enterprise Information Management (EIM) company, has announced that it recently entered into a definitive agreement to acquire Covisint Corporation, a leading Cloud platform for building Identity, Automotive, and Internet of Things (IoT) applications.
Wind River, a subsidiary of Intel and software developer for the IoT, has announced that it will join with the Transportation Research Center (TRC), Ohio State University (OSU), and the City of Dublin, Ohio to advance smart, connected, and autonomous vehicle technologies.
Tulip, a developer of manufacturing app platforms, has announced $13 million in Series A financing. New Enterprise Associates (NEA) led the round, along with participation from Pitango Venture Capital and many returning angel investors.
Plume Design, an Adaptive Wi-Fi developer, has secured $37.5 million in funding from new investors, including Comcast Cable, Samsung Venture Investment Corporation, and Presidio Ventures, an affiliate of J:COM, Japan's largest cable operator.
Over the last few years, I have seen some major trends forming across nearly every vertical in the consumer and industrial spaces, and these trends looked like they were pointing toward a future where the IoT would indeed be improving the lives and living conditions of people all over the world, and so I decided to begin writing a book in order to look for patterns in those trends. That book, published recently, is called “IoT Time: Evolving Trends in the Internet of Things.” In a new weekly series, we’ll be previewing chapters for you to read in the hopes that you’ll like enough to read the whole thing.
