IoT Evolution World Week in Review: Intel, Nokia, Telefonica

By

Welcome to the IoT Evolution Week in Review, my friends. This week, we’ve been talking about global cybersecurity, the IoT Evolution Expo, healthcare technology and more. Let’s get into it, shall we?

In our lead story, Team8, Israel's leading cybersecurity think tank and company creation platform, has added Intel to its global membership. The company joins Microsoft, Cisco, Qualcomm, AT&T, Citigroup, Accenture, Nokia, Temasek, Mitsui, Bessemer Venture Partners, Eric Schmidt's Innovation Endeavors and Marker LLC in the mission to solve cybersecurity’s biggest challenges. This new strategic relationship will help Team8 incubate disruptive companies that address cybersecurity and provide organizations with an advantage over cyber threats.

This week, we begin our special series of Q&A interviews with the speaking faculty at the IoT Evolution Expo, coming up in Las Vegas July 17 to 20. This week, we spoke to Lee Gruenfeld, Jeff Liebl, Israel Alguindigue, and keynoter George Mulhern.

And now, the news: NetComm Wireless and Telefonica have announced the signing of an IoT Device Supply Agreement to strengthen NetComm Wireless' presence in the U.S. and Europe and offer new 3G/4G M2M/IoT capabilities as Telefonica extends its IoT reach to over 2,500 enterprises worldwide.

Nokia has recently announced the availability of its largest-ever, most comprehensive line of connected consumer health products on the market as the completion of the transition of products from the recently acquired Withings brand.

The Internet of Things is changing so many aspects of our daily lives that’s it’s almost hard to keep up. In fact, thanks to technology and the IoT, it won’t be long before many of the items that we use on a regular basis will become obsolete. Consider these items that could soon be obsolete, thanks to IoT.

Research & Markets shared their prediction that the still early global precision agriculture market will reach over 43 billion USD in less than ten years. And while there are many technology ecosystem components, as well as engineering and consulting services rolled up into that number, a substantial chunk can be attributed to IoT-based solutions using remote sensing to collect information on everything from temperature and moisture levels to nutrients in the soil and crop productivity.

Samsara, an Internet-connected Industrial IoT (IIoT) sensor systems developer, has announced the recent closing of $40 million in Series C financing led by General Catalyst, with participation from existing investor Andreessen Horowitz and Samsara's founders.

Over the last few years, I have seen some major trends forming across nearly every vertical in the consumer and industrial spaces, and these trends looked like they were pointing toward a future where the IoT would indeed be improving the lives and living conditions of people all over the world, and so I decided to begin writing a book in order to look for patterns in those trends. That book, published recently, is called “IoT Time: Evolving Trends in the Internet of Things.” In a new weekly series, we’ll be previewing chapters for you to read in the hopes that you’ll like enough to read the whole thing.

On the IoT Time Podcast,  I sat down with Steve Hanna, chair of TCG’s embedded systems and IoT work groups, and principal at Infineon where he’s focused on IoT security, to talk about IOT and network security and his session at the upcoming IoT Evolution Expo, July 17 to 20 at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas.

There’s plenty more to read, listen to and watch, so visit us on IoT Evolution World for all the IoT news, my friends. Now is the time to put into your calendar the next IoT Evolution Expo, to be held in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Also, please get in touch with us when you have stories. As always, if you have questions, comments, complaints or compliments, please send them to me, editorial director Ken Briodagh at [email protected] or on Twitter @KenBriodagh.
