The machine-to-machine (M2M) space enables wireless and wired systems to work together seamlessly on various devices, serving as a system of sorts that combines networks that send and receive data. While popular everywhere, forecasts released by Pyramid Research late last year are predicting that Asia-Pacific will be the market leader in M2M subscriptions in volume terms in 2013, and in 2016 is expected to comprise nearly 37 percent of the market.
As the vertical continues to grow, there are several key events that highlight this technology, with the recently concluded M2M Evolution 2013 being one of them.
Discussing an array of topics from how M2M technologies can be leveraged in order to see advantages including streamlining overall operations in any enterprise and scaling down the associated risks to ramping up revenue, M2M Evolution highlighted how these applications are particularly ideal within the supply chain, transportation, energy and healthcare sectors.
People involved in this space, such as wireless carriers, application providers, platform companies and device manufacturers, assembled in the Miami Convention Center in Miami, Fla. last week to discuss where this industry is headed.
During that time, Omnilink won the M2M Evolution's 2013 Battle of the Platforms competition, receiving the ranking of Overall Best Platform Award.
This prestigious honor is only given to the M2M platform that earns the highest nods in five critical categories including Enabling Independent Application Developers, Best Business Information Controls Solutions, Best Platform for Service Providers, Best Platform for Enterprise Deployments and Best Horizontal Platform.
Steve Hudson, Omnilink's chief development officer and mobile thought leader, said in a statement, "All of the competitors were worthy and the presentations were excellent," commented Hudson. "We feel honored to have participated alongside such high-caliber technology leaders. Winning is validation that the platform we've spent years evolving and refining is truly best in class, and the solutions we've created with that platform are world-class."
In order to enter this contest, companies must create a 15-minute presentation, presented to a panel of judges as well as all interested M2M Evolution participants.
Hudson's presentation consisted of how his firm got its start in location-based services (LBS) technology which continued to be enhanced over time and eventually transitioned into supporting mission-critical tracking situations used by businesses in every industry.
Omnilik’s portfolio now boasts the capabilities needed to flexibly and cost-effectively power personalized solutions to its customer base that can be utilized to track and monitor key people and things.
Competition judges consisted of Carl Ford, cofounder of Crossfire Media; James Brehm, senior strategist with Compass Intelligence; and Mike Sapien, principal analyst at Ovum. Battle competitors included M2M leaders Digi, Spireon, Axeda, ThingWorx, WebNMS, Gurtam, ILS Technology, and Modus.
Clearly the M2M provider is doing something right, as this Best Overall Platform Award is Omnilink's 21st award in only eight years. Further back in May, the company’s asset tracking products were selected by Sprint to expand its portfolio. With this strategic alliance in place, Sprint users have various device options at their disposal that they can now turn to much more closely track and monitor whatever they link through a comprehensive yet easy-to-use interface.
