Remote power transmission was Nikola Tesla’s dream, and the future will likely be built upon the capability. One of the keys to making wireless power work in an IoT world will be the ability to transmit data along with sufficient power.
In an announcement December 30, Ossia said it has added this exact capability to its Cota remote wireless power system: the ability to carry device-related data. The data moves through the Cota power transmitter to cloud based applications or to enable IoT devices to interact with each other directly, the company said.
This patents-pending innovation seeks to meet the need for a standardized networking technology that allows devices to communicate with one another and the cloud, paired with the ability to supply remote wireless power to complex devices and remove the limitations inherent in battery power.
Cota's platform, with this new data capability, can now become an IoT hub that allows all of the things in the IoT to stay charged and to work together.
“Until a common IoT language emerges, it remains unclear how connected items — wearables, smart appliances, home automation and more — will communicate,” said Hatem Zeine, founder and CEO, Ossia, and inventor of the Cota technology. “Defining this standard is the first step to bringing the IoT to life. Without the ability to power and connect these devices, the true potential of an intelligent network of things may never be fully realized.”

The Cota technology charges many devices at once, regardless of whether a device is stationary or moving — such as a wearable bracelet on someone's wrist. A single Cota charging station can simultaneously power the battery-operated devices in an average size room in a home or an office suite.
