Interdependency of IOT and Cloud Computing

Internet of Things (IoT) and cloud computing are the technologies taking the world by storm. The surprising thing was their interdependence.

Gartner predicts that IoT will include 26 billion units installed by 2020, which seems to be a reality considering today’s situation. Examples of IoT can be found almost everywhere ranging from applications to keep watch on your baby to applications to avoid disasters and there are many more on the way.

IoT has to deal with the production of huge amount of data which needs to be stored, accessed, processed and transferred, posing a serious problem. This is where cloud computing comes into picture.

Cloud computing effectively tackles this data problem, but also the problem of services. The processing of sensing data streams can reach new heights if IoT is effectively combined with Cloud Computing. This interdependency proves to be of a great advantage in helping businesses access applications and services from any place, anytime, anywhere and from any device.

Public, hybrid and mobile-based cloud computing technologies are providing companies with a way of connecting traditional information systems to IoT-enabled devices. This capability will allow enterprises to build sense and respond systems quickly and economically.

This concept has also been implemented into everyday life by Philips Hue System, which combined lighting systems with a mobile app, changing our perceptions regarding the household lighting system environment. The best example of this concept in the workplace is memory. Employees don’t have to worry about storage while working with the cloud.

Cloud’s abilities range from pooling of resources and broadening network access to on-Demand self-service and rapid elasticity.

For more about how cloud merges with the IoT, check out the Fog Computing collocated event at IoT Evolution Expo, August 17 to 20 in Las Vegas.
